Understanding the Challenges of Living with Type 1 Diabetes

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a life-long condition where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or does not use insulin properly. Insulin helps manage the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood.

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that causes the body to stop making insulin. T1D is treated with insulin.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) causes the body to not use insulin properly. T2D can be treated with lifestyle changes and other diabetes medications.

Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and increases the risk of T2D later in life.

Pre-diabetes occurs when glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
