e-Learning – Mental Health & Diabetes in Youth
This course, developed in 2016 and updated in 2019, is for healthcare professionals and school teachers. It may also interest parents of youth living with any type of diabetes. The course has been accredited by the Australian Diabetes Educators Association as a CPD course for their members.
Genesis of the Course
The comorbidity of diabetes and mental disorders in youth and the rising numbers of Type 2 cases bring new challenges for health care providers with respect to:
- Recognition and interpretation of symptoms;
- Delivery of disease self-management education for youth and their families;
- Preparation and implementation of effective treatment and transition plans to assist youth and their families to move successfully from the paediatric to adult healthcare system.
This course is a response by SFBLF to help mitigate the resulting ‘knowledge gap’ identified to us by educators and health care providers at our annual Banting Legacy Transition Symposium in November 2014 and confirmed by a regional validation survey of health care providers in 2015.
Learning objectives were established in collaboration with regional health care providers. Content was researched and written by SFBLF and reviewed by an international team of diabetes educators, mental health experts, physicians and paediatricians in Canada, the USA and Australia.
Goals of the Course
- Enhance understanding of respective challenges facing health care providers who support youth living with diabetes and those who support youth living with mental health challenges.
- Nurture cross discipline communication.
- Provide planning and implementation frameworks, references and resource material to assist health care providers to leverage their experience and creativity to improve ‘connections’ and identify ‘solutions’ that bridge the gap in care available for youth living with both diabetes and mental health challenges.
Content Overview
In this course you will explore:
- The global context for prevalence of diabetes and mental illness in youth.
- Major global, national and regional initiatives now emerging to improve disease prevention and the delivery of care for diabetes or mental illness or both in support of youth.
